Impersonation Scams Claiming to be Ground News

Edited

Ground News has received reports of phone calls from individuals falsely claiming to represent our team. These callers have reportedly contacted our community to conduct opinion polls on political issues and/or candidates.

We want to emphasize in this article that these calls are not from Ground News. We do not conduct polls, interviews, or unsolicited outreach by phone, and we have not authorized any third party to do so on our behalf.

To help safeguard our community, this guide outlines how to recognize these impersonation scams, what Ground News will and won't do, and what steps to take if you're contacted.

What Ground News Will Never Do

Ground News will never:

  1. Call you to conduct a political poll or opinion survey

  2. Make unsolicited phone calls or email outreach requesting information

  3. Authorize a third party to conduct these activities on our behalf

If any caller claims otherwise, it is an impersonation scam.

What To Do If You've Been Scammed?

If you believe you've been targeted or your information has been compromised by these scams, it's important to act quickly. This situation is more common than many people realize.

Consider taking these steps:

  • Report the incident: Contact your local fraud reporting center or your telecommunications provider

  • Notify your bank: If financial information has been shared, inform your bank provider immediately so they can help secure your accounts. Many banks offer account locking features through their mobile apps.

  • Update your passwords: Change passwords for any compromised accounts. Using a paraphrased password can help improve security

  • Monitor your accounts: Regularly review your accounts and credit reports for any unusual activity

By learning to recognize, reject, and report suspicious activities, you can significantly reduce your risk.
